Cake Smash Photography in Wollongong, Illawarra and Sydney
How exciting you that you and your baby are ready to celebrate with a cake smash!! A cake smash is a fantastic way to document those early years and have some memories that will last a lifetime.
When to do a cake smash:
Cake smash session are so much fun. You can choose any age for a cake smash photo shoot. Anywhere between 10-14 months is ideal because you baby is inquisitive and will love the texture of the cake and the taste is still so new. If you organise it soon enough you can use the photos for the 1st birthday invitations. We can do cake smash photoshoots up until 3 years old.
What to expect:
Cake smash photoshoots are held in my home studio in Austinmer, South of Sydney in the Illawarra (Wollongong) where you and your baby can be comfortable, relax and have some fun. Plenty of street parking is available. I will provide a studio set up with themed studio flooring and backdrop. I also provide decorations like, pompoms, balloons, bunting, cake stand etc. I will take care of the mess afterwards and provide a comfortable area for you and your baby to clean up.
I let the baby set the pace of a cake smash session. Some babies are over and done with in a few minutes while others need some time. Ideally baby gets stuck in and smashes up the cake with gusto however more likely your child will need some encouragement.
What to wear:
The outfit you choose for your baby should complement the cake and visa versa. Try to select your outfit before selecting your cake so you can coordinate similar colours and create a cohesive look.
Tips for selecting clothing:
- Choose colours that match or compliment the cake.
- Tutus, ribbons, lace, a tie or bow. a super hero cape, headbands, necklaces, hats, kids braces make fantastic accessories.
- Sometimes a nappy is all you need.
- Ensure you can wash the outfit and your own as you will get messy.
- Mums should expect too have some photos with your child if encouragement is required so dress in similar colours as your baby.
Choosing your Cake
Not everyone was born with fabulous baking skills (I recently gave up baking as it never turns out like the picture in the cook book, there must be something I’m not doing right) If you prefer someone to make a cake that actually rises. I know a very talented local cake maker who makes amazing giant cupcakes. The cake will be delivered to the studio ready for your cake smash. Easy, stress free and guaranteed beautiful and delicious. Your cake can be customised based on your theming. Let me know if you would like to add this to your photoshoot.
If you are a kitchen goddess, here are my guidelines for making your cake:
- Light cakes are great for the photoshoot and look more appropriate smeared on a baby’s face.
- Use pastel colours to match the background and stay away from red and chocolate icing.
- Sprinkles, decorations, smarties etc look great and add vibrant colours for the photographs.
- I recommend buying or making a oversized cupcake. See below for healthy cake recipe. Add some sprinkles, stars, colourful confectionary for a bright finish.
I will have all the necessary supplies ready for you and baby to clean up. Clean towels, face cloths and plastic bags to take home the cake smashed clothes.
Don’t forget to bring a set of clean clothes for you and baby.

“We had so much fun at our cake smash shoot! Judith is fantastic with kids and combined with her quick and professional photo skills we got so many great pictures to share with friends and family. I was impressed with the amount of different shots she got done in relatively short time. Just what you need when your l yo only gives you small window of opportunity between sleeps! I highly recommend her for any shots you need done; especially with young children.”
“I would absolutely recommend the cake smash photo shoot with Creative Events Photography. My daughter was very comfortable and she had lots of fun during the shoot which was important to me. The flexibility in photo shoot times also meant we could do the shoot straight after my daughter’s nap to ensure she was happy and we could take great pictures.”
