One thing is certain, people in Sydney know how to have fun, and what could be more fun than a festival? Taking your camera out to take some amazing professional photography. Get these ones onto your calendar if you are a professional photographer and live in Sydney, and if you don’t, consider planning your visit around these dates so that you can join in the festival activities with unforgettable photos. To make it easier for you to get your photoshoot started, we’ll look at the year’s top festivals in chronological order.
1. Sydney Cellar Door (February)
As you can guess from its name, the Cellar Door is a wine festival. What goes with good wine? Good food of course! (People love food photography!) And if you think that good music is lacking from the equation, think again. Hyde Park is transformed into a gourmet paradise complete with live music every year in February, so spoil yourself with a visit and bring your appetite along.
2. Mardi Gras (February / March)
You’ve barely recovered from Cellar Door when Mardi Gras comes along with its party vibe. You can get some amazing colourful event photos at this event! Get to Liverpool Street early if you hope to have a good vantage point, and be on the lookout for Mardi Gras themed parties at local establishments. It’s not just for the LGBT community!
3. The Sydney Harbour Regatta (March)
Have a day out with the family and witness the spectacle of more than 300 yachts in Sydney Harbour. There are invariably linked events and all manner of activities in keeping with the theme. Why not enjoy a seafood dinner on the day? You can bet that local restaurants will be geared up for the event.
4. The Sydney Royal Easter Show (April)
Absolutely a family-friendly event, there’s something for everyone at Sydney Olympic Park. Enjoy animal displays, daredevil motorcycle riders and stalls galore. Watch the website to get the full schedule and pick the entertainments you don’t want to miss.
5. The Sydney Family Show (Also Easter)
Do you want to capture the moments with a camera when families have fun? The Easter holidays are anything but boring in Sydney. The kids are going to love this one, so get down to Moore Park so they can enjoy the rides and stalls. Sweets will be eaten, and kids get a chance to interact with animals. No kids in the house? Come along anyway, and let your inner child loose. If that’s not your cup of tea, there are also more adult attractions. This is a great event to practice your family photography.
6. The Mothers’ Day Classic (May)
Do something different this Mothers’ Day, and join the thousands of relaxed participants in a fun run/walk that raises funds for breast cancer. Be as competitive or as laid back as you like, and soak up the friendly atmosphere. Take professional photos for mothers and give them a memory that will last forever.
7. Vivid Sydney (May-June)
Music-lovers and those who can’t resist an impressive light show can’t miss Vivid Sydney. The program is jam-packed with unforgettable sights and sounds, so be sure to check the schedule so you won’t miss out on the highlights. Be creative with your light photography ideas.
8. City2Surf (August)
Another fun run or walk for cancer charity hits Sydney in August. Even if you aren’t feeling all that active, it’s worth cruising the route to see street performers and all the action. If you can manage the 14km route, you can go at it like a contender, or just stroll along. Nobody is going to laugh at you if you’re last across the finish line. Do you like sports photography?
9. Sydney Running Festival (September)
From a full marathon to an easy 4km family run, there’s a race for anyone at the running festival. The 9km bridge run is highly recommended, but sadly, you won’t be allowed to take photos on the bridge itself but I’m sure you will find a good spot to put your camera in action. Get in shape for September and keep that commitment in taking amazing sports event photographs of fit people running.
10. The Crave International Food Festival (October)
If the mere thought of all this running and walking exhausts you, hang in there. October sees a feast for foodies. (Again, people love food photography.) Hyde Park is the place to go in order to sample international cuisine, and your only difficulty will be in deciding which delicacy to sample next. Need some refreshment? Get down to the beer garden with your mates and enjoy a few cold ones.
11. Carols In the Domain (December)
The biggest ever Christmas music event is held in the Botanical Gardens. If you need an injection of Christmas spirit, this is the place to be. Arrive At noon and enjoy a luncheon before the 3:00 pm lead-up to the main event. The show bags are filled with value, and funds go to the Salvation Army. Carols are by candlelight, and that makes for a gorgeous sight.
12. Celebrate New Year’s Eve along Sydney Harbour
Fireworks over the harbour are the highlight, but the festive atmosphere is great too. If you want to usher in the New Year with a bang, then Sydney is the place to be. No matter how jaded you are after a long year, you’ll be inspired by the display to take amazing photos. Go and enjoy the night to take photos of fireworks and New Year’s Event Celebrations.
Sydney is the city for people who love photography!
No matter when you’re in Sydney, you are sure to find music, art and sports events great to practice your photography skills. As a semi-pro or a professional photographer, these mega-events are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things to do in Sydney, but if you like a festival atmosphere, they’re the ones that you need to plan around. Enjoy!
